God Wink Gathering
In August 2009, we documented a unique gathering of distinguished veterans from five different wars who came together to share their stories and common bonds. Facilitated and hosted by Phil Smart, Sr. who served with General George S. Patton in North Africa, this gathering featured veterans who came together through a series of coincidences and what Phil called "God Winks." Among the veterans in attendance were George Patton "Pat" Waters who serves on the Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation Board and is the grandson of General George Patton, Phil's 1937 Roosevelt High School classmate Ralph Jenkins who flew 129 missions as a P-47 Thunderbolt fighter-bomber pilot in Europe and who is credited with severely wounding Field Marshall Erwin Rommel (Patton's arch-enemy) during a mission in July 1944, three Vietnam veterans who served with Special Forces, and a woman, Tara Rego, who earned a Bronze Star while serving in Somalia. The DVD of the "God Wink Gathering" was so well received that a copy was provided to each of the 95 surviving recipients of the Congressional Medal of Honor.
